  • Isle of Dogs (2018)

The Good:

Avengers Infinity War really surprised me. I have probably said this before but, MCU movies rarely blow me away. They’re consistently good and do enough to keep me interested, but this is one of those rare occasions. Infinity War is a fantastic ensamble movie that is pulled off almost to perfection and is easily one of the Top 5 MCU movies I have seen.

The Old or Surprising:

I went back to last year to revisit a movie that made a lot of top 10 lists, David Lowery’s A Ghost Story. It’s an unusual story that probably left audiences polarized in either a love it or hate it. I don’t imagine this has a very big middle ground. The symbolism and imagery are undeniably beautiful but the story does take it’s time and if your not completely sold from the start, it can get long and feel tedious. Personally, I liked it quite a bit.

    • Pain and Gain (2013)

The Good:

I’m calling the good for the month a tie between Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness. I really enjoyed both movies and this is coming from a Star Wars person. Never watched the TV series or the previous movies and know very little of the background or characters but these were a blast to watch. High hopes for the third movie. 9/10 for both.

The Bad:

God might forgive but I don’t. Nicolas Winding Refn was coming of a smash hit in Drive and dropped a hot artistic deuce on us with Only God Forgives. I loved Drive and it immediately got me on the edge of my seat for whatever Nicolas was making next so this artistic piece was a giant let down. I probably need to give it a second viewing with a more open mindset but I’m good. 4/10

The Old or Surprising:

Thought I would be discussing The Bad News Bears here but instead I’m going to go with something that surprised me, 21 Jump Street. I knew it had a great cast but I remember when they unearthed Starchy and Hutch for a movie and how poorly that went. This wasn’t that at all. This is a very funny movie that hits relentlessly on the comedy. Storyline is weak as expected. Watch it for the jokes and embrace the storyline because it’s the right thing to do. 9/10
